Overview
Ron Buel Field is the home of the Drake softball program. In 2005 an extenisve renovation took place as the current press box was built and it includes a sound system, phone lines and internet access. The fence behind the backstop was replaced by a netting system and a low brick wall. The outfield got treated with a state of the art drainage system to help keep the field playable. In April, 2011, a new Daktronics scoreboard was installed in right-center, adding visual flair to the facility. The board features a stylish arched design and a Daktronics ribbon board at its heart. Buel Field underwent another renovation in the fall of 2012 as permanent chair back seating was installed down the third base line, as well as permanent bleachers behind home plate and down the first base side. The projects were made possible by generous donations from Ron Buel (BN 1962).
Another project was completed in Aug., 2017 as the outfield wall received a facelift. The fence was cut down in height and new blue padded walls were placed that feature "Drake Bulldogs" and the D-Dog logos. This project was made possible by a generous donation from Kurt E. Brewer (BN 1979).
Buel Field is one of the premier softball facilities in the region and Missouri Valley Conference. It hosted the 2018 MVC Softball Championship, the second time the field hosted the championship.
